Frequently asked questions

Does it really cost that much?

Whilst the price of different materials makes an impact on the cost, the labour side of the equation is usually the larger part. The landscape industry is still very labour intensive and narrow access paths and “through the house” projects can contribute considerably to the labour costs. Where we can, we will always look at the possibility of mechanical help by employing mini excavators and power barrows to help make some savings. Because of the extra care we take with your project we tend to take a little longer. This may result in us not being quite as competitive as other companies. You will, however, be able to see the difference in the quality of workmanship.

When can you start work and how long will it take?

It is advisable to tell us if work is required urgently as we usually have a waiting time of approximately two to three months, depending on the time of year. We always try to give an accurate estimate of when your work will begin and how long your project will take and this will be given with your letter once your project has been confirmed. We hope that our clients will be understanding of the weather conditions that prevail in our great country and which can have a knock-on effect for start and completion dates.

When will I be invoiced for the work?

For most small projects we invoice once the work is completed. Payment is requested within 14 days. For larger design and build projects, payment is broken down into several instalments. Details of this will be given once your project has been confirmed.

Will you leave my garden and the pavement outside in a huge mess?

It is our policy to leave your garden and all affected areas tidy at the end of each day and, once the project is completed, to clear away all debris, soil and cement.

Who will be working in my garden and how will I recognise them?

All our employees wear uniforms bearing the Stephen Ogilvie logo. Our employees are very approachable and knowledgeable so please feel free to ask their advice. They will all arrive in company vehicles, again bearing the company logo.

Are you environmentally aware?

Much of the advice we give our clients nowadays is based on an increasing need for environmental awareness.

  • We believe in building structures properly with sound foundations as this increases their lifespan, thereby reducing future waste through the need to re-construct. We also recommend, where appropriate, the use of reclaimed and natural materials, thereby reducing the demand for concrete. For example a dry-stone wall using reclaimed stone is much kinder to the environment than a manmade mortared wall.
  • Natural stone paving is now much more affordable, and in some cases cheaper, than the concrete alternatives.
  • Recycled hardcore base materials are readily available now and this reduces landfill as well as expensive mining.
  • We use organic soil improvers and have a very good local source for these.
  • When pruning shrubs and reducing hedges the cuttings are all recycled. Our arboricultural work is either chipped on site or removed and recycled later.

Wherever we can we actively try to employ environmentally friendly practices.
